These Old Shoes

These. Old. Shoes. Hand-Me-Downs. Surpassed their life expectancy. Soles slick as snot.
Whenever Roy wants to wear a skirt, she chooses her "Jordan Shoes". And I ask her, "Would you not prefer these snazzy ones? "
        "Jordan Shoes, mom!"
Is it a shorts-and-Tshirt kind of day?
        "Jordan Shoes, mom!"
She delights in the fact she has gym class five days a week. She would wear them every day if I let her. She has seven other pairs of shoes, five that work perfectly well for gym. She first wore them when they were too big. And now they are verging on being too small.
        But: These. Old. Shoes.
If you asked her, she might tell you that part of her heart is missing. You see, the young girl, this amazing Jordan, who lived across the street, moved across town. She doesn't get to see her every day anymore. But I know she thinks about her daily.

Thank You, Mr. Policeman!

There are two reasons I am making this post. Number one, we need to be aware of and be thankful for how helpful and diligent police officers are. The second reason is to reinforce what you may already know: keep your doors locked on your vehicle at all times!
Royanne and I were returning from Round Rock. We had been to Abi's Orchestra performance. We were debating on getting a snack at Whataburger and decided to stop at the one at the end of Gattis School Road next to Outback Steakhouse. We pulled into a parking space that was facing the steakhouse and I locked the car doors as we applied sanitizer so we did not have to go to the restroom once we got inside. Royanne was putting on her sanitizer and I said "be sure and get your fingertips " when all of a sudden someone tried to open my door and then banged on the window several times. The first thought I had was "that makes me really mad! "And I laid down on my horn without stopping!! He was running toward Outback Steakhouse but then he turned around and came back. That's when I asked Royanne to find my phone so I could call 911. I was watching him in the side view mirror when he came back and this time went around on Royanne's side. When I was on the phone with RR dispatch, I did not realize she had opened the door and was out of the car! She was standing up she was looking over the roof & when I saw THAT, I screamed "GET IN THE CAR, GET IN THE CAR!" As he zoomed by he hit the side of the car. She was SO freaked out, she began screaming, all the while I am talking to dispatch. He went around towards the front of the car and back the other way so I told dispatch where I was and which direction he was going and that I was going to follow him. I told them that he was going around the back of Whataburger, headed over to where the drive-thru is. I followed him and stopped briefly to see where he had gone but I could not see him. That's when I saw a dark blue Mustang turning tight circles across the way in a different parking lot. That is when 3 -THREE - police cars headed to where I was: I had given them a description of my vehicle, and so I told the dispatcher that I saw the policeman and she told me I could hang up and they would come talk to me. By this time the driver of the blue Mustang was out and he was on the phone. He was really freaked out. He was in his 20s he was breathing hard and had a lot of adrenaline going on. He was also talking to dispatch. We compared stories and that is when he told me that the guy was trying to get in his car while he was driving it through the parking lot. I said "I don't know where he is" and then Royanne saw him. He was near the guard rail. He was climbing over the guard rail, going down the grass embankment headed for I H 35! The 4 policeman ran towards the guardrail, doors left open. The guy in the mustang took off. We thought he was also looking for that bad guy. It was at this time that the policeman ran back to their cars and all of them left. We waited a few minutes. They did not come back. We saw a bunch of ladies up by a boxing place so we went up to see if he had been bothering them and that was why they were on the sidewalk. But they said no, they were just getting out of a class. Royanne was still hysterical, crying, sobbing, hyperventilating, face red and swelling and one of the guys that was there came to her side of the car and was comforting her while I was telling the ladies what was going on. It was then one of the ladies said "look at the police, they just went across the highway. ( 6 lanes!!!) you don't think he made it all away across the highway do you?" We waited a while longer and when the police didn't return we assumed they were still looking for him. We headed home and after a few miles got a call from one of the policeman and asked us to come back and write out a statement. So we went back they had caught him! He had been trying to get into cars at Rudy's barbecue, CVS pharmacy and another place Two of the policeman tried to calm R and gave her a badge for being brave. As they were chitchatting and asked where she went to school we found out that one of them is best friends with the. father of one of Royanne's friends. ❤️
Man! We'll be up late, no doubt.

Lemonade, anyone?

A few Saturdays ago, Royanne had a lemonade stand. Her friend Riley came to help. They started about 10:30 a.m. and went until about 3:30. pm They made just under $100. Her daddy was asking her if she would like to have another lemonade stand, this time for charity. She said "Sure!" He said "What charity would you like to donate to?" And she said "The Royanne Kelly charity!" And he said "What? You're not a charity!" And she said "Dad, you've got to understand something: this age that I am, I'm a little bit stingy!"
Bahahaha !

Hide and Seek

As you can see, R is hiding under a jacket in the hallway. I was in another part of the house, collecting trash to take out Wednesday night. She called for me and I came around the corner and approached her hiding under the jacket. She thought I wouldn't see her (or her feet) amongst the other jackets and assorted bags. But I did and she couldn't believe it. She also can never scare me, when she jumps out of somewhere or hides on the other side of the kitchen island, crawling and skirting it as I go around the other side. So, since I didn't fall for her trick, she called for her dad. He walked right past her and was looking for her in the living room and the kitchen. Hilarious! She makes my day. Often!

Growing Up Questions (a.k.a. EEEKKK!)

Royanne has asked me several times what that little silver trashcan is for in public restroom stalls.
All I've told her is

"Don't touch it. Ignore it".

Well, seems she LOOKED INSIDE ONE. She told me "Mom, I think there was a bad accident. I saw a bloody glove."

Oh Boy! I guess it is time for a little talk.

Breakfast With Daddy

Bruce went to the school this morning for "Bring Your Father to Breakfast". After breakfast, they had RUN FOR LIFE. They don't let the kids run next to one another because the girls tends to talk, then slow down and walk or stroll, no exertion. (On a side note, in junior high, the bus was permanently girls on one side, boys on the other, due to shenanigans by  Glenna and me!)  So, anyway, after Bruce's 3 laps and Annie's 4, she tried to get credit for 7 laps!!!!

When Was God Born?

Question of the day: "Mom, when was God born?"
Me: "God always has been, he was not born."
Then she said, "I don't understand what that means."
So I continued.

"God created everything God has always been here. Something like that is hard for us to understand because we are children. He created us. He does not like us to know everything that he knows. But, on the other hand, there are things that we know the answer to. That is one reason he sent his son. So he could be born and know how it is to have fun and play. So he could know how it feels to love a parent. Remember when he was with his disciples and he knew he was going to die soon? He asked his disciples: can you wait for me here while I go pray? Every time he came back to check on them they were asleep! Don't you think he was frustrated with him? Don't you think he wanted to cry? Don't you think he felt lonely? No one would wait up for him, no one could stay awake. He probably felt like no one cared: not his father is not his friends. His heart was breaking. He did those things he came to this earth so he could learn how it felt to be one of us. So now when we pray to God through Jesus, Jesus can explain to God how we feel."

She hugged me and then she said "Mommy I think I'm going to cry."
